Design social features around trust
Choose audience, accountability and moderation before adding a feed.
A useful starting point
Choose the audience and operational responsibilities before adding visible activity.
Ask: Who can see this, respond to it and exercise authority?
Community is more than visible activity
A shared reading plan, prayer group, public comment feed and one-to-one support relationship have different audiences and responsibilities. Begin with the relationship being supported. Publishing more activity is not proof of belonging.
The Kairos manuscript argues for formation connected to community and embodied action. This is a theological contribution, not proof that a particular social feature works. Online relationships can be meaningful and accessible; offline referral is not always possible or safe.
Choose the social shape

| Shape | Benefit to explore | Requirement to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Private shared plan | A chosen rhythm with known people | Optional activity visibility; no automatic disclosure of missed days or private notes |
| Prayer request to a selected group | Mutual support | Audience preview, third-party privacy, edit/remove controls and resharing expectations |
| Public discussion | Broader perspectives and discovery | Moderation capacity, reporting, blocking, harassment response and clear conduct rules |
| Leader or mentor relationship | Continuity and accountable support | Visible role and limits, safeguarding, boundaries for minors and freedom to leave |
| Invitation to action beyond the app | Connect reflection with service or relationship | Voluntary, suitable and accessible destination; no surveillance to prove participation |
Review the sharing flow
- Select what to share; private notes and AI inferences stay excluded unless deliberately added.
- Preview the exact audience and content, including a named third party.
- Confirm publication with a clear visibility state.
- Make report, mute, block and leave routes discoverable; state what group administrators can see.
- Explain removal limits: another participant may already have copied the material.
A documented audience distinction
YouVersion’s Android help distinguishes private plans, friends-only plan activity in the Community Feed, and Plan with Friends activity visible to participants. It also says Community Feed or timeline plan activities cannot be deleted. This is a documentation example, not a tested current app flow.
Takeaway: show who sees participation before someone joins, and explain what can be removed. eSafety’s Safety by Design framework places provider responsibility alongside user autonomy and accountability; a block button alone does not provide a moderation service.
What still needs investigation
This is an initial framework. Comparative social-flow captures, moderator research, minors’ needs, denominational differences and long-term community outcomes remain open. No live moderation or safeguarding service is established by these diagrams.
Review question: can a person decline sharing, miss a session, challenge a leader or leave the group without public penalty?
